Pep Guardiola Could Manage Qatar For 2022 World Cup

Mar 29, 2015 5:25 PM

Pep Guardiola could become manager of Qatar for the 2022 World Cup.

Guardiola spent two seasons at the end of his career at Al-Ahli of Qatar and was also an ambassador for their successful bid to host the competition.

For the fifth successive season, Bayern spent last month’s winter break in Doha and Guardiola was in no doubt when asked whether the World Cup would be a success in the Middle East.

“The people in Qatar have to help the country to make the event the best that is possible. The world will be watching and I hope the people here can help out to show the world that they are capable of hosting the biggest event in football,” he said.

“Fifa has always tried to look for new areas to promote the sport. They went to South Africa in 2010 and in 2022 they have decided to come here. It’s a good step to come to this part of the world. It will help the rest of the world to know this part. Football at the end is a great opportunity to meet different cultures.”

Guardiola has yet to sign an extension with Bayern Munich and he's also expressed interest in one day managing in England.

Mar 20, 2015 4:22 PM

FIFA had $2 billion in revenue for 2014 and $337 in profits with the success of the World Cup in Brazil.

FIFA, which pocketed $140.7 million in profit in 2014 alone, added $91 million to its reserves, which now stand at $1.523 billion. The revenue of $2.096 billion in 2014 raised the four-year total to $5.718 billion.

"This success underscores the huge appeal of FIFA's flagship tournament," the governing body noted in its annual financial report published Friday.

FIFA said revenue tied directly to the tournament in Brazil was $4.826 billion, compared to $3.655 billion for the 2010 World Cup in South Africa. Much of the increase is due to an accounting change which includes ticket sales.
